Recently I used AI to research an entire market in one hour. It would've taken me weeks manually. But here's the weird part: the speed didn't make me feel more productive. It made me realize I've been using research as an excuse to avoid building. Turns out when you can research anything in an hour, you run out of reasons not to start.
🔍 Multiple Agents, One Synthesis
I'm building tools for real estate and law firms—markets I already know pretty well from working in legal tech and real estate before. But knowing a market doesn't mean you know the current competitive landscape. I needed to understand who's building what, how they're positioning, and where the gaps are.
I had multiple AI agents research different competitors simultaneously. Then I gave all their findings to one LLM to synthesize. What came back wasn't just scraped feature lists. It found pricing inconsistencies, identified positioning gaps, and spotted problems competitors weren't solving. One insight became my entire strategy.
But here's what bothered me: I didn't figure this out. AI did. I just read it and thought "that's smart." If it's this easy for me, my competitors can do the same thing to my product once I launch.
😰 Where's The Moat?
When research becomes instant and available to everyone, what creates competitive advantage? AI gave me information about a market gap. But information isn't valuable if everyone has it. The valuable part is choosing to bet on that gap. Structuring your entire product around it. Saying no to other opportunities to go deep on one thing. AI identifies opportunities. It can't decide which one to pursue.
⚡ Speed Created A New Problem
When research takes one hour instead of weeks, you analyze too many opportunities too fast. I now have detailed competitive analysis for real estate CRM tools, law firm case management software, local media platforms, and three other markets. All done in two weeks.
This should be good, right? More information means better decisions. But having ten researched opportunities is harder than having two. I can't filter based on "I don't know enough about this market" anymore. I know enough about all of them.
Now I need different criteria. Which market do I want to spend years in? Which problem do I care about enough to push through when it gets hard? These questions need self-knowledge, not market knowledge. And self-knowledge is way harder to get than market data.
🏗️ What Actually Matters
AI can tell me what my target customers want. But it can't build relationships with them. It can't earn their trust over months. It can't learn from watching how they actually use a product versus how they say they'll use it.
AI compresses research, planning, and initial development. It doesn't compress distribution, trust-building, or learning from real usage. The moat isn't knowing the market exists. It's being embedded deeply enough to understand things you can only learn by serving customers over time.
🎯 The Pattern Everywhere
Last week I used AI to write Python scripts for data automation. The scripts work great. But anyone can ask AI to write scripts. The scripts aren't the moat. Knowing which data matters is the moat.
I used AI to create strategic plans for a real estate CRM tool and two other products. The plans look solid. But anyone can generate plans. The moat isn't having a plan. It's committing to one and executing instead of jumping between ideas.
AI collapses the value of artifacts. Plans, research, code, content—anyone can generate these now. What's valuable is what AI can't do: choosing what to build, committing to a direction, earning trust, executing consistently.
😬 What This Exposed About Me
AI didn't just make research faster. It exposed that I was using research as procrastination. When research took weeks, it felt productive. I was learning, being thorough, de-risking. But I was delaying the moment I'd have to commit and execute.
Now research takes one hour. I can't hide behind it. The information is there. The analysis is done. So now what? Actually build? That's scarier than more research.
AI stripped away the comfortable friction of slow processes. It made me realize I was using research to avoid commitment. Now I only research what I'm willing to build. The rest? I let go. Because fast data without focused action is just another form of procrastination. And I've wasted enough time pretending information gathering is the same as making progress.
